ABSTRACT

Fish culture can be organized in a complex with other branches of agriculture, and each combination can serve the purpose of a rational utilization of water-covered areas as ponds for fish rearing and other purposes. Two forms of mixed farming are widespread—rice-fish and carp-duck culture. The management of carp culture in rice fields almost does not differ from that at usual fish farms. Since it is closely associated with the agronomical base of the rice crop, however, certain deviations perforce are expected. The practice of fish cultivation without rice or in fallow rice fields kept under water, is gradually being recognized as more efficient method of mixed rice-fish culture. At present two methods of fish culture in rice fields are followed in world practice: together with rice in the same field, and without rice, i.e., leaving rice plots fallow under water. Proper planning is necessary for fallow rice fields kept under water for fish rearing and for successive rice crops.
