ABSTRACT

The release of fish in ponds which are unprepared, neglected, muddy, overgrown with emergent aquatic plants, or filled with large quantities of trash and predatory fish, especially the nondrainable type, is economically foolhardy. Preparations of nondrainable ponds for fish stocking include: checking the water quality by chemical analysis for suitability for raising the particular fish species; eradication of trash and predatory fish since the former compete for food and the latter prey on the fish being cultured and clearing the ponds of stumps, roots, and various other kinds of plant residue. For the development and normal operation of partial one-year production farms a widespread network of fish hatcheries is necessary, the capacity of which must correspond to the requirements for stocking material with the accepted degree of intensification. Shallow water bays of reservoirs are increasingly being used for the production of culturable fish. Along the Kuibyshev reservoir alone the number of such shallow water bays constitutes more than 30,000 hectares.
