Characterization of C(X) by Functions which Operate

Our goal is a theorem of Katznelson (8.6) asserting that if the square root function on ℝ⁺ operates (Definition 4.15) in a point-separating and conjugate-closed Banach subalgebra of C(X), then that algebra is all of C(X).
