ABSTRACT

As a healthcare professional, being a good listener is not enough …. Recognizing, appreciating, and understanding what is being communicated helps to shape specific and appropriate responses that enable the speaker to feel heard and understood. Mental and physical healthcare are inextricable linked, and knowledge of psychological medicine is essential for the care of the whole patient. Fear is an almost universally encountered condition in the healthcare setting. Important as it is to listen empathetically, it is even more important not to miss a life-threatening treatable psychiatric condition. Antisocial Personality Disorder is one in which individuals seem incapable of experiencing shame, expressing remorse, and learning from their mistakes. There is no effective therapeutic intervention for individuals with Antisocial Personality Disorder. The other personality disorders or adaptations may benefit from long-term therapy given by highly trained psychotherapists or psychiatrists.
