ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the development and certification of systems with software. The reason for the grouping of software with certification and safety is that software development is a critical safety element and contains its own certification process requirements within the overall aircraft certification process. The certification authorities will consider the plan for software aspects of certification along with other aircraft data required for certification. The software accomplishment survey will be an essential ingredient in certification compliance. Specific methodologies and standards have been produced for the development and certification of systems with software. Most importantly from an Systems Engineer point of view, the certification authorities do not consider software to be a separate entity from the rest of the aircraft. Therefore, the aircraft manufacturer is obliged to submit certification compliance evidence in a total aircraft context. The software accomplishment survey will be an essential ingredient in certification compliance.
