ABSTRACT

The sources for requirements for the development of a new, derivative, or change-based aircraft design fall into two primary categories: regulatory and economic. A performance requirement is a measure of the extent to which a system performs a function. The specialty requirements pose a special challenge to the systems engineer. Design requirements are the attributes of the item needed to meet the performance requirements and constraints. The left side of the Vee model represents the flow down of requirements as needed from level to level of the aircraft hierarchy. Since verification must be performed at the same level as the requirement, the verification steps will be performed from bottom up as shown in the Vee model. The mission statement is the first step in the requirements development process. Traditionally the regulatory requirements have been passed to the aircraft manufacturers through the Federal Aviation Regulations and have been verified in a certification plan submitted by the manufacturer.
