ABSTRACT

This chapter includes more extensive sampling, providing bottled water or installing in-house point-of-use water filtration systems until contaminant levels are reduced to acceptable levels. Ground water contamination may be reduced at unlined dumps or landfills by installing relatively impermeable clay and / or synthetic caps to reduce infiltration of precipitation, installing venting systems, or installing seep collection and treatment systems. A thorough site characterization that incorporates an adequate ground water monitoring component is essential to effectively assess and attempt remediation at a contaminated site and to reduce the associated expenses. Proper site selection, engineering, and monitoring of new waste disposal sites also serve to reduce ground water contamination before it occurs. The permit can stipulate monitoring requirements, waste handling procedures, where waste products must go, maximum discharge rates of parameters of concern, and reporting requirements including monthly, quarterly, and yearly submittal of the required data.
