ABSTRACT

This chapter develops an understanding of how the "self-fulfilling prophecy" affects shiftworker performance, health, and lifestyle through two extremely different views. Understanding the two views of shiftworkers and patterns of behavior associated with each, will make or break us as a manager or trainer in 24-hour work environments. A large number of shiftworkers report some form of "gut trouble". Shiftworkers are known to be often irritable, grumpy and even depressive. The dark and bright views of shiftworkers act as self-fulfilling prophecies that lead to the two shiftwork models: Burnout and Achievement. Achievement, in the Achievement Model, becomes a career-long event that is maintained — by continuously working on four areas: fitness, alertness, sleep, and time off.
