ABSTRACT

The shiftwork and human error problem is becoming better known at the national level. This chapter presents an overview of the impact of shiftwork on safety. It discusses shiftwork safety problems and helps us to communicate and sell safety needs to both upper management and employees. The chapter provides specific suggestions and the proven techniques that may help overcome the problems. Chernobyl is a well-known shiftwork catastrophe that occurred in the early morning hours. This case of immediate human error coupled with planning and engineering Set-Ups continues to spin off disastrous consequences. Shiftwork often goes along with the Set-Ups of irregular hours, rotating schedules, and excessive overtime. Shiftwork set-ups have led to many train incidents over the years. US nuclear plant safety has fared much better than Soviet nuclear safety.
