ABSTRACT

The US Space Program accomplishments are a prime source for shiftwork performance improvement. The F.A.S.T. Tracking format settled on us while NASA personnel were showing us the shuttle tracking screen at Johnson Space Center Mission Control. One secret of F.A.S.T. Tracking is that it is a very interrelated system. If the employee improves efforts in just one F.A.S.T. Tracking quadrant, he/she will soon notice a definite overall performance improvement. When working in the Danger Zone, there are critical procedures the employee should perform to compensate for the reduced alertness. Although not all shiftworkers are aware of the Danger Zone, many have expressed great concern over their drive home at midnight, 6 a.m., 7 a.m. or 8 a.m. The NASA astronauts must maintain high alertness and near perfect performance throughout their shifts.
