ABSTRACT

Obtaining a commercial driver's license (CDL) is necessary prior to an individual having the legal right to drive a commercial motor vehicle on public roads. Though the CDL process provides measurement to establish a level of expertise and a standard of performance, the main purpose is to provide for the safety of human life. The rules related to obtaining a CDL apply to all individuals wishing to operate a commercial motor vehicle. The only exceptions to this apply to the following:Farmers, Firefighters, Emergency response vehicle drivers, Drivers removing snow and ice, and Military drivers. The employer has two additional rights and responsibilities. First is the right to request additional information from the applicant. Second, employers must inform the applicant that not only will they review the work history information, but they also may directly contact the companies that have been listed.
