ABSTRACT

This chapter reports the costs of the Craney Island phytoremediation technology demonstration and provides estimated costs for full-scale phytoremediation. Before- and after-treatment costs are shown at the second level of the work breakdown structure (WBS) and costs directly associated with treatment are shown at the fifth level of the WBS. Finally, estimated costs are compared to costs for alternative technologies. The purpose of the cost model is to illustrate the relationships among the cost elements and to provide, at best, order-of-magnitude cost estimates. However, the costs for water resource development were too regionally variable to estimate for this report. Site preparation costs assume that soil is present at the surface or in stockpiles and that site investigation and excavation of contaminated soils were conducted previously. Operating costs comprise all of the costs which must be paid repeatedly throughout the life cycle of the phytoremediation program. Phytoremediation costs will have average sensitivity to gross margin and profit margin.
