ABSTRACT

Some aspects of the composting process can pose potential environmental, health, and safety problems. Decision-makers must be aware of these possible complications before proceeding with composting facility planning so that measures can be taken to avert difficulties. This chapter will help officials understand the potential risks involved with composting Over the past several years, several composting facility closures have occurred due to some of the problems mentioned in this chapter, particularly odor. The first portion of this chapter describes the possible environmental concerns associated with the composting process such as water and air pollution. The second section discusses potential worker health and safety issues. Potential environmental, health, and safety concerns associated with the compost product are discussed in Chapter 9.
