ABSTRACT

When the multiple-hearth furnace (MHF) is on-line, it is not unusual to have ducts, flanges, and pipes that are extremely hot. Workers must be protected from these hazards. Protective clothing that is heat resistant is recommended. When wearing this protective clothing, it is also important to keep in mind that the furnace building contains mechanized machinery. Mechanized machinery and loose clothing do not make for a safe mix. Thus, it is important to protect workers from burns by requiring them to wear protective clothing but it is also important to ensure that each worker’s clothing is tight fitting. It is also important to ensure that the clothing worn is of the nonsynthetic material type. Qualified electricians who work on electrical equipment should wear hard hats that are made of nonconducting materials. Metal ladders should not be used when working on electrical components/equipment.
