ABSTRACT

The Damara fold belt is divided into two parts : an intracontinental or internal branch and a coastal branch still called Kaokoveld or Kaoko fold belt. The relationships between these two fold belts remain unclear. Starting in 1975, the Damara fold belt was the subject of an intensive study undertaken in particular by the West-Aftican and Namibian Geological Survey and the University of Gottingen. The predominantly arenaceous Nosib Group was deposited in a system of graben, five for the intracratonic Damara belt. In the last few years, the existence of a Pan-African ocean at the site of the internal Damara fold belt seems to have become accepted, even if its width is disputed. In spite of the numerous studies published the past ten years, the is no clear picture of the general structure of this fold belt and existing relationship between continental and atlantic branches.
