ABSTRACT
Burzahom is situated in Srinagar district, about 16 km northeast of Srinagar in Kashmir valley, between Srinagar and Ganderbal. The site stands on the ancient lake bed called Karewa (Uddar in Kashmiri dialect) at the foot of the Mahadeva hills and commands a panoramic view of lush, green fields in the immediate vicinity and the shimmering waters of Dal lake. The excavations have revealed that the site is primarily a Neolithic one capped by a Megalithic complex which consists of menhirs raised at a different stage. The excavations have brought to light four cultural periods: Burzahom Neolithic I, Burzahom Neolithic II, Megalithic Period, Early Historical. Semthan in Anantnag district is situated 44 km almost south of Srinagar on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, about 2 km from tehsil headquarters of Bijbehara. The site is located on the ancient lake bed of the valley floor and the serpentine Vitsta (Veth in Kashmiri) closely and calmly flows past.
