ABSTRACT

Household improvements by local tradesmen trained in innovative techniques, using locally available materials, promote the local economy and create healthier living environments for families. The only available data source was the 2011 Idenau Council Development Plan, which was mandated by the government to benchmark and improve the living standards of Council areas. The Happy Healthy Households project focused on increasing awareness of the relationship between poor health and poor housing. It also helped reduce disease stigmatization and incidences of tuberculosis among participants. The Idenau municipality, which is the subject of this publication, is located in the Anglophone (English-speaking) region, the Southwest region also known as Sud-Ouest region. The Idenau Council Plan identified some significant concerns within the municipality such as limited water and sanitation infrastructure. Industrial waste such as sludge from oil mills is dumped in the streams, which pollutes the water and degrades the quality of the air, causing health concerns for the community.
