ABSTRACT

The main challenges around sanitation that were consistent for Idenau are: there is a lack of consistent access to clean and adequate water; there is a lack of knowledge to encourage healthy hygiene behaviours at the community level; and there is little to no waste management. The actions proposed by the project can be divided into a number of phases that build on each other. The pilot phase will include a sensitization exercise to begin to address open defecation with the idea that embedding knowledge and awareness around why the changes are important will be critical to long-term success. The goal of the Pilot Phase is for the community to become Open-Defecation Free (ODF) and to maintain champions who ensure this status is maintained. In Phase I, through community participatory planning exercises, the intent is to implement necessary measures to facilitate maintaining the ODF status. Phase II will create a holistic initiative to combat the lack of access to potable water, solutions around waste and sanitation, and to create a healthier community from the household level to the city level.
