ABSTRACT

This chapter first introduces readers to broaching with reference to its types (internal broaching and external broaching) and applications. Broach design features and analysis are presented with the aid of diagrams and mathematical models; here broach design parameters (pitch, tooth depth, land, broach diameter, root diameter, shank length, cutting length, the maximum force that can be applied on a broach, and the like) are mathematically inter-related so as to develop in the reader the skill of broach design. Engineering analysis of broaching operation is presented with reference to mathematical models for computing the area of uncut chip per tooth (CPT) for keyway and round broaches, the material removal rate, the CPT, and the force required for broaching operation. This chapter contains 14 mathematical models and 8 calculations/worked examples.
