ABSTRACT

Grinding machining operations are industrially important owing to a good surface finish produced by grinding machines. This chapter first introduces readers to the principle and advantages of grinding, and then explains grinding wheel parameters with references to abrasive materials, grit numbers, wheel grade, wheel structures, and bonding materials. Surface finish and surface quality have been explained with reference to surface texture, surface roughness, lay, and the like, and the techniques to achieve a good surface finish in grinding have been established. The surface roughness has been mathematically modeled in terms of the arithmetic average R a . Grinding machines have been classified and illustrated with the aid of diagrams and photographs. Engineering analyses of surface grinding and cylindrical grinding operations are presented. This chapter contains 14 diagrams/photographs, 9 equations/formulae, 4 Tables, and 15 calculations/worked examples.
