ABSTRACT

This chapter describes and presents the analysis of thermal energy non-traditional machining processes: electric discharge machining (EDM), electric discharge wire cutting (EDWC), electron beam machining (EBM), laser beam machining (LBM), and plasma arc cutting (PAC). The EDM process is explained along with its applications; it is also mathematical modeled to calculate the spark energy and the metal removal rate (MRR). The EDWC process is explained with the aid of sketch; it is also mathematically modeled to calculate the kerf and MRR. The EBM process is described with the aid of a sketch and process capabilities. The mathematical modeling of EBM covers expressions for calculating the electron velocity, the depth of penetration, and the cutting speed. The LBM process is also explained with the aid of a sketch. Finally, PAC process is illustrated stating its advantages/limitations; here the formula for calculating the operating cost of PAC is also derived. This chapter contains 5 diagrams, 12 mathematical models, 9 calculations/worked examples, and 6 MCQs with answers.
