ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author applies the tools that develop the logical architecture for the system. These models and tools help to illustrate a view of the high-level functionality to be provided by the system. The value chains and the Functional Decomposition Model (FDM) provides an inventory of the functions performed by the system. These functions are used to elicit the customers’ requirements and derive the systems or technical requirements. The FDM is used to identify system functions and the processes that comprise them. The FDM then is in essence a taxonomy or inventory of system functions in that each top-level function generalizes its lower-level functions. Use cases diagrams are a graphical representation of use cases or functions organized from the users’ perspective. The use cases, which are covered in the design phase, are narrative descriptions of the use case diagrams.
