ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses contact temperature sensors. The majority is devoted to resistive temperature detectors (RTD) as the widely used industrial temperature sensor with special focus on Platinum RTD's. Other RTD types such as Nickel and Copper are discussed as well. Next thermistors are discussed with explanation about theirs non-linearity and electronic circuit. Several bridge circuits useful non only for RTD's or thermistors are then shown. Focus is on the influence of ambient temperature changes around the connecting wires between the bridge and the sensor. Next thermocouples are discussed. The principle is explained, name and color labeling standards are shown together with range and expected accuracy. Finally the placement of all temperature sensors in pipes, tanks and solids is discussed.
