ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the use of DS/AI for detecting and preventing COVID-19 and at the same time explores how the privacy of the individuals may be preserved. It is an extended version of the keynote address presented at the IEEE BigData Conference Workshop on BigCyber. There were many debates and panels on data mining, national security, and privacy. Data mining combined with statistics and big data have evolved into Data Science over the past ten years. Whenever data are collected about individuals and these data are stored, managed, shared, and analyzed, there is a high probability that the individual's privacy is violated. The chapter has discussed the applications of data science to the COVID-19 pandemic and then described the serious side effects such as violations of data privacy and civil liberties.
