ABSTRACT
The various ways metals can fail are discussed with the types of fracture surfaces than can occur considered. The various methods of non-destructive testing are considered. The degradation of metals by oxidation, electrolytic corrosion, rusting and stress corrosion are considered with examples being given. Protection methods against such corrosion are discussed. The chapter also includes a discussion of the stability of plastics and timber preservation.
