ABSTRACT

Whether due to a devastating accident, NIMBY sentiments, or targeted attacks by activists, many industries at some time may find themselves in seemingly insurmountable communication challenges. There are a number of factors that can exacerbate risk communication difficulties, including inherently hazardous or complex operations, a poor industry track record, and negative campaigns by opposition groups. Surviving these difficult circumstances may require more than a steady course along a principled plan of action. Industries should consider exploring ways to be held accountable to rightfully skeptical stakeholders. In addition, more engagement in policymaking and more robust methods of connecting with host communities should be explored. Finally, perspective should be maintained when dealing with activists to help limit their influence to areas where mutual benefits may be gained.
