ABSTRACT

Octopus dofleini (genus Enteroctopus) are the octopus species which are found in rocky areas, kelp forests and caves in the Pacific Ocean. Unlike many other species male octopuses eat young ones in seasons of nonavailability of food in the oceans. Most of the octopus sold globally is for Traditional Chinese Medicine which is now recognized by World Health Organization as a valid form of health care as it is used by one-fourth of the human population. Among the cephalopod resources octopuses are least exploited in India although they occur in appreciable quantities around the Indian coastal waters. Octopus meat is also a good amino acid like leucine, Isoleucine, tryptophan, threonine, lysine, valine, histidine, and vitamins; Vitamin A, Niacin, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin A and Choline. The octopus achieves the unique motor skills by its peculiar muscular structure, named muscular hydrostat.
