ABSTRACT

For naming fatty acids in 1953 a new biochemical system of nomenclature was suggested replacing the old Geneva system. There are 11 omega-3 fatty acids identified existing in nature. Clinical studies conducted have shown the beneficial effects of omega-3 fatty acids in prevention of atherosclerosis, prevention of heart attack, reduction of joint pain in osteoarthritis and some disorders of the nervous system. Modern research has revealed that most important fatty acids are the Docosahexaenoic acid and Eicosapentaenoic acid. Modern research has shown that supplementation of omega-3 fatty acid in diets reduces considerably both Pulse Wave Velocity and Augmentation Index values in people of age group between 60 to 80 years group. Arachidonic acid is an essential fatty acid seen widely distributed in most mammals. An imbalance in the omega-6 and omega- 3 fatty acid ratio is attributed to be the main reason for inflammatory and auto-immune diseases.
