In this chapter, we explor e the simple truth that metrics are vital in determining if any endeavor, whether it be sports, business, or management systems, has a measurement system that addressees success or failure. In the management of safety, such systems are especially challenging since many of the successes are what didn’t happen. Furthermore, the safety metrics of the past have done a poor job of defining the role of a modern safety professional and have limited the areas of what we considered a success.
