ABSTRACT

Third-party damage is unauthorized right-of-way encroachment and activities near a pipeline that accidentally strikes, damages, or ruptures a pipeline. Third-party activity has always been, and remains to this day, a threat to the integrity of a pipeline and the primary cause of major failures of pipelines. Population growth, and increased human activities along the pipeline right-of-way, can lead to an increase in the likelihood of damage to onshore pipelines. Therefore, it is important that where an increased possibility of third-party activity is found, a larger degree of inbuilt safety against such activity is specified or provided. An onshore pipeline operator needs mitigation measures that are focused primarily on third-party interference prevention.

This chapter presents remedial measures that could be applied to reduce third-party damage to onshore pipelines.
