ABSTRACT

Maize is classified into 7 groups by based on the endosperm of kernels. They are flint, pop, waxy, and sweet. Each type of corn has unique kernel characteristics that determine its use and how it is grown. The grain is used for human consumption and is the basis of pop-corn confections. Popcorns are essentially small – kernelled flint corns and is among the most primitive of the surviving races of corn. The waxy corn hybrids developed in United States of America with starch similar to tapioca are grown for supplying raw materials for speciality products of the wet milling starch industry for textile and paper sizing and corn oil. White corn types are equal to yellow types in carbohydrate content but are deficient in vitamin A. High-oil corn is attractive as a livestock feed because it has greater energy value than normal yellow dent corn and can replace more expensive dietary sources of fats and proteins.
