ABSTRACT

The different choices of gaming console reflect the reality of edge computing – edge computing is a very fragmented world. Edge computing often involves multiple interconnected devices. Hence, networking is an important aspect of edge computing. Many research and infrastructural frameworks emphasize providing reliable and flexible connectivity among devices as well as between devices and cloud – this is where our journey starts. Traditionally, network functionalities are provided by delegated networking devices (such as routers and switches) with integrated proprietary software. This chapter surveys technologies that coordinate actions of multiple devices. It explores the idea of creating some sort of uniformity out of the multiple perspectives. For devices, the chapter walks up the layers from hardware to virtualization to upper-level software stack. Finally, the chapter reviews different human players and the roles they play.
