ABSTRACT

Communication is important for decision-making on a battlefield. Pyrotechnic compositions producing coloured smoke are useful in communicating, tracking and acquisition, marking and dropping zones in combat operations. It is also useful in distress signalling as well as colourful display. This chapter provides the role, methods of colour smoke production, mechanism of bursting type and volatilisation and condensation type compositions, typical signalling colour smoke compositions orange, red, green, yellow, blue, black, plastic bonded/castable signaling colour smoke compositions, factors affecting perception of signalling colour smoke compositions, advantages of castable colour smoke compositions and special requirements of signalling colour smoke compositions.
