ABSTRACT

Controlling unruly mobs, anti-insurgent activities and rescue operations needs materials to incapacitate a person or a large crowd. Riot control compositions are found to be very useful for this purpose. These compositions use riot control agents, which affect the human eyes, nose, mouth, throat, lungs and skin, producing various symptoms like burning sensation, itching, coughing, difficulty in breathing, etc. These symptoms remain for about 30 minutes after the individual is moved out from the affected area. This chapter provides the role, typical riot control agents, its toxicity, signs and symptoms of exposure, its working on human body, mechanism of riot control agents, typical riot control compositions and special requirements of riot control compositions. References are provided at the end of the chapter.
