ABSTRACT

Time delays in performance of ammunitions is a major requirement. Pyrotechnic delays have been found to be extremely useful in meeting this requirement. These have found wide applications not only in military pyrotechnics but also in rockets, missiles, space vehicles for various synchronised activities. These compositions need priming and or priming and booster compositions for ignition pick-up. This chapter provides the role of delays, delay burn rates, delay burning train mechanism, factors affecting delay burn rates, advantages and disadvantages of delays, delay-filled components and classification of delays, shapes of delays, burn rates of some delays and special requirements of delay compositions. References are provided at the end of the chapter.
