ABSTRACT

Screening smoke causes a degradation of visibility in warfare. It is used to hide the combat weapon system, movement of personnel, etc. It is used in offensive and defensive operations. Hexachloroethane, white phosphorous, red phosphorous, anthracene, etc. based compositions have been found to be very effective. Infrared smokes conceal the infrared emission of the target and thus reduce the effectiveness of infrared-guided missiles. This chapter provides various screening smoke ammunitions and devices like grenade smoke, mortar smoke bombs, aircraft smoke bombs, artillery smoke shells and cartridges, generator smoke or container/pot smoke ammunitions and infrared smoke ammunitions. References are given at the end of the chapter.
