ABSTRACT

Determination of the performance parameters of pyrotechnic composition is essential in the assessment of its characteristics and suitability for use in a specific ammunition. This chapter provides methods to determine various performance parameters of pyrotechnic compositions, such as moisture absorption, apparent bulk density and loading density, ignition temperature, heat of combustion and heat of reaction. combustion temperature, luminosity and burn rate, infrared intensity and burn time, flame length of composition, ignition delay, burn rate, ignition energy, compaction strength of pressed composition, infrared attenuation by smoke, obscuration power of screening smoke, sound intensity, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, volume of gaseous combustion products, efficiency of composition and colour purity.
