ABSTRACT

Pyrotechnic compositions on ignition provide the desired special effects. Ammunition also requires other compositions which assist in its performance. It is necessary to manufacture compositions with utmost care to ensure safety as well as maximum utility for providing the desired special effects. This chapter provides classification and nomenclature of military pyrotechnic compositions, sieves and the overall process of manufacture of pyrotechnic compositions, such as dry mixing, wet mixing through hand mixing and mechanical mixing, advantages of elastic pyrotechnic compositions, granulation, advantages of granulation, drying, factors affecting drying, factors affecting mixing/blending, mechanism of segregation of ingredients in composition, storage and transportation and testing/evaluation of composition, checklist for pyrotechnic composition mixing and drawbacks in literature on pyrotechnic compositions. References are provided at the end of the chapter.
