ABSTRACT

Classification of electrical machines and a description of well-known machines are presented briefly in this chapter. Readers are encouraged to refer to the texts from which they would have learned their electrical machines at the undergraduate level to remind them of the machine terms and their explanations. Only two types of motors and their drive systems are considered for elaboration where most of the entrepreneurship activity is concentrated at this time. They are in permanent magnet synchronous motors and in switched reluctance motors. Basic description of these motors, their flux orientation in the form of axial, radial and traverse flow, their stators, rotors, modeling of motors and their basic control are all described to understand the basis for emerging technologies and startups in these fields. Some performance simulation results are included for these motors with their drives to illustrate their high-performance capabilities.
