ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the management strategy for controlling the troublesome problem of whiteflies. Monitoring and surveillance of the crop from the beginning of the cycle are most important. The whitefly has developed resistance to most insecticides and a resistant management strategy is an important step to take care of whiteflies. The chapter highlights the various strategies suggested based on information generated from yellow sticky traps. A tentative sequence is suggested for plant protection experts. To lay a strong foundation, the first step is to look for a breeding methodology to develop resistant varieties. To have a strong foundation, resistant varieties of crops should be planted. At the present moment, highly susceptible varieties are being grown that need to be replaced. After this step, it is useful to follow all preventive cultural measures. These practices are applicable before the sowing of the main crop to prevent the build-up of whiteflies. The plant protection expert assesses the situation and choose the next strategy carefully. For example, based on the efficacy of insecticide, the expert should choose pesticides to which the whitefly has not developed resistance and withdraw those to which it is resistant. However, the need-based application of the new chemicals should be ensured. The use of new chemicals cannot be ignored while tackling the whiteflies. This chapter has provided a tentative strategy to deal with this difficult pest.
