ABSTRACT

Industrial tensions between employees and employers were high during the 1970s and employee strikes were commonplace. Ironically, growth typically occurs in a state of discomfort, so some level of disruption needs to occur within the workplace for growth at that level (examples include different work, a new learning situation, a different boss, or a new attitude). People's motivation is influenced by a wide range of factors including life satisfaction across the course of one's life, generational differences, and unique gender needs. Extrinsic rewards (such as money, bonuses, and special gifts) provide limited motivation. The common motivators are more likely to be intrinsic rewards (that is, the value derived from work). Business leaders should also put sufficient thought into their office environment so that it presents as a stylish, functional, organized, and professional office space. It is easy to get overwhelmed with work that clutters the workspace; however, the clutter can become an eyesore visually and will often adversely impact productivity.
