ABSTRACT

This chapter showcases an effective planning approach to underpin preparing oneself for board roles and/or meaningfulness in retirement; it starts with envisaging the “vision,” articulating practical steps, applying a memorable formula, and even monitoring the progress. Individuals aspiring to move to the other side of the boardroom table need to take steps to broaden both their technical and specialist expertise, and their product and industry knowledge. Business leaders, and governance, risk management, compliance, and assurance specialists will often have periodic interactions with the board through routine reporting or by presenting occasional updates. When interacting with the board, it is important to communicate in a language they understand. The six common purposes of a board involve: setting policy and direction; monitoring operations for compliance and mission; representing the organization; serving as strategy partners; keeping records for the organization; and developing current and future leaders.
