ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces, or revisits, web and network basics for cybersecurity. It shows the various models and approaches given to network information transfer and abstraction. This includes the TCP/IP and OSI models. It reviews protocols and ports as well as the basic elements that make the web work. This includes ports readily utilized in basic and more advanced operations, including FTP, SFTP, SSH and legacy protocols which may cause issues such as Telnet. This chapter also looks at how web servers work, such as Apache and the communications involved between the client and the server itself.
