ABSTRACT

This chapter is an initial discussion of what a supervisor needs to know about asset management. Asset management does not tell you how to take care of your assets. But once you figure out the criticality and the value provided, a strategy will emerge. Highly critical assets should get more attention. Assets whose failure will cause loss of life or widespread environmental damage should get more attention. We have scarce resources, so we have to stratify the care by the impact.

Reliability Strategy Development is the process of deciding how and why to take care of each asset. RSD considers the risks and the value provided and provides the appropriate strategy. It is an essential first step to a prioritized and rationalized investment of talent and time.
