ABSTRACT

PM is two-sided. One side is the detection of defects, damage, and deterioration and correcting it before failure. The other side is postponing or preventing the damage, decay, or defects in the first place. There are only a few ways to delay or avoid failure.

TLC (Tighten, Lubricate, and Clean) will push off the failure to the future. TLC is one of the few activities that, by itself, will postpone failures.

TLC means tender loving care. When we apply this to machinery, we get Tighten, Lubricate, Clean. Keeping equipment trim and clean will extend the life and reduce the level of unscheduled interruptions. This approach or strategy is appropriate for all maintenance departments, even those with no support from top management or maintenance customers. TLC is the simplest way to reduce breakdowns.
