ABSTRACT

With increasing population, power demand is increasing proportionally, and hence the size and constraints of power system are also increasing. The three major constraints that affect the power system operations are optimal power flow solutions, damping of subsynchronous oscillations, and congestion management. The application of flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) devices aid in the optimal operation of power system. The subsynchronous oscillations create issues in network planning of power systems; hence, the study of subsynchronous resonance and mitigation techniques is important. While FACTS devices find solution to congestion management, their exact placement provides enhanced power transfer capability. In this chapter, an overview of issues and constraints in power system is presented.
