ABSTRACT

This chapter is dedicated to the discipline of completions engineering which prepares the well for the production phase. Completions involve putting piping in the wellbore, cementing, perforating, stimulating, installing sand control, and installing production equipment at the wellhead. The chapter examines the processes involved in stimulating wells to maximize hydrocarbon production after drilling is complete. It discusses various stimulation techniques including hydraulic fracturing that are used to increase production from low permeability reservoirs. Technologies used to prevent reservoir sand from entering the wellbore are described. Typical completions costs are presented and contrasted with drilling costs.
