ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to present a concept of organizational information technology (IT) capability, and methods of measuring and assessing IT capability, as well as its relationship with organizational business performance. A citation and co-citation bibliometric analysis of “IT capability” research has been conducted. The conceptualization and measurements of IT capability are mapped. Moreover, the IT productivity paradox is presented and as well as perspectives on the influence of IT investment on business performance. The main findings suggest that there are two available approaches to IT capability conceptualization and measurement: the scientific and the technical/practical approach. The scientific approach is more oriented toward the management aspect of IT capability, while the technical/practice-oriented approach is focused on international standards in IT management. Additionally, there is still a dilemma about the influence of IT and organizational business performance, but there is a pervasive view in the literature that this relationship exists, directly or indirectly, mediated by some other capability.
