ABSTRACT

Chapter 9, “Development of IT Capability”, presents the Information Technology Capability Maturity Framework (IT-CMF), which is issued by the Innovation Value Institute, as one of the models and approaches to how the information technology (IT) organization’s level of maturity can be assessed. The IT-CMF provides a body of knowledge, tools, techniques, and guidance for IT professionals that can help organizations innovate, grow, and prosper. Maturity levels for each capability are presented, accompanied by approaches, scope, and outcomes. Also, four main macro capabilities (Managing IT like a business, Managing the IT budget, Managing IT for business value, Managing the IT capability) are introduced. These four macro capabilities operate in a continuous feedback loop, so the organization can continually focus on the IT capabilities that need to be improved. This will be followed by a description of each 37 critical capabilities. Critical capabilities are key areas that the organization needs to consider upon planning and delivering IT-enabled agility, value, and innovation. Brief guidelines and directions on how to develop and improve each capability will be summarized.
