ABSTRACT

Standards have been introduced to protect the health of the consumers and to ensure fair practices in seafood trade. The formulation of standards for fish and fishery products are necessary to attain a minimum standard of cleanliness and hygiene in fish handling, processing and marketing. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India was established under Food Safety and Standards, 2006 which consolidates various Acts & Orders that have hitherto handled food related issues in various Ministries and Departments. Section 92 (1) of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 empowers the Food Authority to make regulations/standards in consistent with this Act and Rules made thereunder. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the erstwhile Indian Standards Institution, which started functioning in 1947, is National Standards Organization in India. Its principal objective is to prepare standards on national basis and promote their adoption. Indian standards are available for frozen products like shrimp, lobster tails, crabmeat, cuttlefish, squid, pomfret, threadfin, mackerel, seerfish, etc.
